A WOUNDED WARRIOR

QUADE

The moment I set eyes on Shayla, I knew there was something special about her. She was walking across the quad with the incubus. And then, as fate would have it, she ends up in the class where I’m the substitute teacher. Her sweet, seductive scent—honey and ripe citrus—have made it almost impossible for me to stay focused on my lecture.

When I realized she was the same student assigned as my mentee, I nearly charged down to the dean’s office to change it. However, I’m the best at drawing out a student’s gift, and it would be unfair to potentially prevent her from discovering her magic.

She needs me. Or that’s what I tell myself. But there’s more to my attraction to her. My wolf wants her. It’s convinced that she’s our mate. But the last female I thought was a mate match broke my heart and destroyed my future. If it hadn’t been for that mistake, I’d be out with the other Mage Protectors, investigating the missing supes. Instead, I’m stuck at this school.

I can’t let my wolf bully me into falling for Shayla—my student, for fae’s sake. I’ve never crossed that line and don’t intend to do so now. I feel like an asshole for being attracted to her at all.

I thought my senses would be muted by dragging her out to the open field, but her scent still drifts toward me, ensnaring my thoughts and causing my body to respond to her soft curves and soulful lavender eyes.

In those eyes, I see a reflection of myself—a wounded warrior.

I guide her through a meditation, asking her to sense her own power. There’s a tremble in her very spirit at the thought of accessing her gift. She hates magic. Or hates the idea of having it.

Breaking down the walls that her mother helped create won’t be easy.

Her body shakes as if someone were rattling her. I open my magical perception and scan our surroundings to sense if someone with the gift of mind control or telekinesis is assaulting her, but I feel no one.

Shayla falls backward. Fortunately, her head lands on the soft, lush grass.

I scramble to her side, looking her up and down to understand what’s happening.

I feel magic churning and grinding inside her body. She does have power. A lot of power. My wolf is correct—at least about her being my equal or even my better.

“Shayla?” I call.

Her body vibrates and shakes as if she were having an epileptic seizure. I turn her onto her side and hold her against my chest, hoping she’ll come out of this fit soon.

My hand automatically strokes her cheek to soothe her.

Finally, her body settles.

“Mr. Hollis?” her voice cracks.

“Quade,” I correct. Shit. Why did I do that? I need to back away, not race forward.

Shayla squints up at me, her head resting in the crook of my arm. “What happened?”

She registers how close we are, and her eyes widen. I know it’s not out of fear of my embrace because her gaze drops to my lips, and I scent her natural perfume.
